As the first book written on this subject, Soundness in the Horse aims to inform anyone involved in the sale, or purchase, of horses what they might expect when facing a veterinary examination. Now called a 'Pre-purchase Veterinary Examination', nothing has changed in essence other than the name. Horses suffer the same conditions, are examined in a formal manner - and the results are recorded on a certificate decided much by legal dictate today.
The procedure cannot change or become modernised, except in the extent to which special diagnostic procedures might be incorporated or new emerging diseases might have to be considered. The task facing the vet is the same - to establish whether or not the horse is fit for the purpose for which it is being sold. It is an essential exercise for anyone buying a horse, not matter at what level they are involved. However we might like to modernise the procedure, an unsound horse is the same today as it was a century ago, with very little difference in the causes.
